Volkswagens TDI is the best option right IMO. They're getting 30mpg city and 40mpg highway. There not loud like older diesels. Most TDI's are in the jetta and passat. There more models but I can't think of them right now. If you buy diesel, keep in mind that Europes diesels will not need any modifications when LSD (Low Sulfur Diesel is mandated here in a couple years.

They have Priuses as taxis here in Tokyo. Not bad but the headroom isn't great.

I'm a wagon fan. I love the practicality of wagons and some of them are quite quick (Audi RS4, Impreza WRX Wagon) too.

There's nothing in the market now that really is compelling at the moment. I think you should LEASE the Hybrid Accord for your wife and drive the TL.

Forgot. You're right, there really isn't much to be excited about. The cars I mentioned are pretty cool but hybrid cars as mainstream cars are just around the corner.

If not a Lotus, I'd go w/ the Audi A3. Lois Lane drives an Audi A3.

The Lexus IS 350 would make you the cool dad on the block and it's really fast.

BMW 3 or 5 Wagon. Super practical.

Or just spring for the Honda Odyssey which you're destined for anyways. :)
