This’ll be a little bit short, as I’m in Beijing at 3a trying to fight off jetlag (here’s a tip: when you wake up at 2a, don’t turn on your computer!), but wanted to post something about the Eudora 8 beta release that’s recently gone up on mozilla.org.
A lot of folks, including Ars Technica and TechCrunch, are reporting that it’s “Mozilla reviving Eudora,” and that’s incorrect, and I think a disservice to the Eudora team at Qualcomm, led by Steve Dorner.
What’s come out today is the outcome of work by the Eudora team at Qualcomm to migrate from their venerable code base (I used and loved Eudora myself for maybe 10 years, and still miss some things about it) to an open source framework — in other words, it’s an extension built on top of Thunderbird. It is not a new release of a mail client from Mozilla. It is a community project led by the Qualcomm team.
I think this will be an interesting thing to see unfold — how much people care about differences in the UI layer for e-mail clients, and how much you can really do in XUL on top of Thunderbird’s way of interacting, so I’ll be curious to see how folks respond.
For now, though, just wanted to clear things up. When I first met Steve & Co at Qualcomm last year, I felt very lucky to spend time with them — those few individuals probably had more impact on my work life during school & afterwards than any other development team. I’m blown away that their commitment to their users extends beyond their own code base, and that they’re working hard to make sure that Eudora users have a road ahead based on open source and a new growing community.

Will the Eudora mod for Thunderbird allow for turning off HTML mail completely, just like I could do with Eudora? I currently have been using mail.app for my mail and am fairly happy with it, but I miss Eudora. I even miss the “boo WEE oop!” sound when you got your mail! That shows how far back I go with Eudora.
Last time I used T-Bird I couldn’t find the setting to make it default to showing mail as text only. That’s why, even though I am a Firefox partisan on the browser side, I stay away from Mozilla products to handle my email. I have no problem with graphics in my browser. And yes, Mac OS X doesn’t have the same minefield of hazards with “enhanced” mail as Windows still does. But I still get the willies when I get lots of crap attached to my mail. If you email me I want “just the facts, ma’am” unless I am expecting something attached. Call me a Luddite but that’s where I am on that.

Given TB being spun off, I think merging the two efforts together is the only logical solution. You’ve even got an organisation (Qualcomm) who would be at the helm.

Eudora has been my mainstay email client for ever, so much so that I cannot see why anyone would want the standard 3-pane window. Having a MDI (multiple document interface) is where its at, and I fear any mix with the other clients may dilute my experience somewhat. One feature I especially like is the ability to edit my received emails. Emails are so often littered with junk or formatting issues, and I do want to save the item in my wonderful mailbox system. Editing the email down to its essential content is something I do ALL the time. They then end up as MY documents. I have been wanting to sound off about this for a while now… thank you for the chance.

I have been a long time Eudora user. I like it and works very well for me. I'm now getting junk mail you can't belive. The sponsered mode doesn't support filters and am wondering if the paid mode does a good job on filtering junk mail. I use the Internet for business and can't easily change email addresses as I have business cards out all over the country. Any suggestions would be appreciated
