Up the Organization, by Robert Townsend

A very quick business book that’ll be good to reread every now & then. Robert Townsend was the CEO of Avis for a long time, and was a particularly direct executive. Some of the stuff is a little outdated (like the bit about making sure you feed your board a big lunch & cocktails so they get sleepy), but lots of good things to remember in your day to day. Takes about 45 minutes to read every word.

Liberty & Security

Anthony Kennedy wrote the 5-4 Supreme Court ruling today saying that even Guantanamo detainees have the right to challenge their detention in federal court. Well, duh. But thank goodness that he stepped up here. He wrote some good stuff in the opinion. Like this:

The laws and Constitution are designed to survive, and remain in force, in extraordinary times. Liberty and security can be reconciled; and in our system reconciled within the framework of the law.

Liberty and security can be reconciled (emphasis mine). That’s something our executive has lost sight of. Thank goodness we have more than 1 branch of government. (And in this case, thank goodness we have more than 2, as the Court had already issued a decision mostly like this, then Congress passed a new law allowing it, and the Court had to tell Congress that even they have to live within our Constitution. What a remarkable thing.)

Living on the Black, by John Feinstein

Interesting look by John Feinstein at 2 of my favorite pitchers in MLB: Mike Mussina and Tom Glavine. Mussina I got to see play a fair bit at Stanford when I was a freshman, so like him a bunch (except that he plays for the Yankees, which stings), and I’ve always liked Glavine since he’s played for the Braves and is such a professional. (I don’t like either of them quite as much as I like John Smoltz, but he’s in the book a fair bit, too, so I was happy.)

Anyway, this book is strictly for baseball fans with long attention spans. Comes in at around 800 pages, goes through every game in the season for both pitchers. Interesting look at 2 of the best ever at a time towards the end of their careers. Great to hear what they’re thinking about from them. Mussina’s having a great year in 2008, and Glavine’s is okay. But both guys are really important pitchers.

Walt Mossberg Calls Firefox 3 the Browser Champ

Great, great video & writeup by Walt Mossberg at the Wall Street Journal on the new Firefox 3 — he really understood & articulated a bunch of things that are really great about the new release.

Mad props all around, to everyone who’s worked so hard on the product, and to Schrep, Mike B & Melissa who went to see him. Great job!!!
